Which device should I purchase?

Students at Chevalier College are required to bring a “personal digital device” to school every day, except when otherwise instructed.

The kind of device varies according to which Year group the student belongs:

  • Students in Year 7–10 are required to bring their own iPad to school, which must meet the specifications below.
  • Students in Years 11 and 12 are required to bring a device of the own choosing to school, as long as it can connect to the College’s network infrastructure, access the College’s Canvas Learning Management System, and use Microsoft Office Applications.

All devices should have a protective case or cover and we strongly encourage students to have a backpack with a laptop or iPad compartment. The College cannot extend its insurance to cover personal digital devices. It is essential that parents investigate the extent to which their existing household insurance may cover loss or breakage, or consider additional insurance. The College will not accept liability for any such loss or damage.

The warranty of most devices will be a reasonable indicator that the life-time of the device will be longer, but repairs may become more expensive after the warranty period. We highly recommend AppleCare for Apple Devices, especially for iPads.

iPad requirements

The following is a basic guide to iPad choice. Note that the College does not recommend parents purchase iPads with the capacity to connect over the mobile phone network (3G-capable). Students must bring their device to school equipped with a protective case. A wide range of cases are available from Apple, Mac1 and other retailers (see this page from the Apple Store) and parents should identify the features their child may need.

As students will be required to complete on-line tasks and tests (including NAPLAN) using their iPad, a keyboard case or bluetooth keyboard is recommended. These are widely available online.

Only more recent iPads with a ‘Lightning’ connector are suitable.

We strongly recommend a minimum storage capacity of 32 Gb. Storage can be extended using Microsoft OneDrive (provided free of charge by the College), Google Drive or Dropbox.

These models are acceptable at the time of publication. It is wise to remember that more expensive and more capable is not necessarily better in the classroom. The iPad Pro is a highly capable device, but its expense and size may make it less useful for learning on a small desk in a busy classroom. iPad minis are no longer suitable because of NAPLAN requirements.

  • iPad Pro (preferably the 10,5 inch model)

Senior device requirements

General notes

Senior students may select the device that suits their individual needs, as long as some basic requirements are met.

The College’s network is very robust, but hard-drives are not. Students and parents are strongly advised to investigate ‘cloud’-based storage and backup, including Apple’s iCloud, DropBox and Microsoft OneDrive. These services all have adequate free accounts. All students will get access to Microsoft Office, Office 365 and OneDrive as a student of the College.

iPads for senior students

iPads are a robust and inexpensive way of accessing digital resources and they can be used as effective word-processors, especially if equipped with a Bluetooth keyboard. Any device used at the College should be capable of running iOS 11. Devices should have a minimum of 32 GB of storage and we recommend against the capacity to connect to the 4G network (‘wifi only’). This include the following models:

  •   iPad Pro 12.9 inch model
  •   iPad Pro 10.6 inch model
  •   iPad

Windows Laptops

Windows Laptops are perfectly interoperable with the College’s systems and compatible with Canvas, the College’s Learning Management System. Minimum specification machines may struggle with some applications.
